This is a community-led project for the benefit of the local marine habitat and our local community which gets both pleasure and work opportunities from it. The idea is to involve the community as much as possible.
Local charity, Heart of Argyll Wildlife Organisation will deliver citizen science activities to local primary schools and community groups focusing on our “oyster hoisters” hanging from the Ardfern Yacht Centre pontoons. Each of these accessible cages will hold thirty mature oysters and be monitored monthly, providing valuable data regarding growth rates, bio-diversity, and spawning patterns.
Over the next five years we plan talks, dive-survey days, species identification training days, as well as an annual Oyster Festival in August.
